Service Delivery

Enhancing the delivery of education services in crisis and conflict-affected contexts leads to measurable improvements in foundational learning outcomes for children and youth: literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills. The way education services are delivered also contributes to increasing social cohesion, stabilizing systems, and building individual and community resilience. To improve service delivery, crisis-affected youth's needs and foundational skills are assessed to inform program design. Holistic programs should address basic literacy and numeracy, relationships, health, civic engagement, and livelihoods as well as appropriate technical and vocational skills. 

At USAID, we are working to ensure that education services are provided in a safe and supportive environment that is responsive to the needs of crisis-affected youth, with a strong focus on livelihoods and community, in addition to education. Elements of quality service delivery include school location (close to crisis or conflict-affected populations), effective school management, access to materials in languages that teachers and learners understand, conflict-sensitive teaching and pedagogy, healing classroom tools, and the use of appropriate technology.
