Conflict Sensitive Education Training, Washington, D.C. - November 2017
For practitioners and policy makers to use INEE’s Conflict Sensitive Education (CSE) Pack and increase understanding and the application of CSE practices and principles in crisis and conflict-affected environments.
Overview
USAID Education in Crisis and Conflict Network (ECCN) joined with FHI 360 and Creative Associates International to host a two-day training in Washington, D.C., for practitioners and policy makers to use INEE’s Conflict Sensitive Education (CSE) Pack and increase understanding and the application of CSE practices and principles in crisis and conflict-affected environments.
The training focused on the following topics:
- Steps for conducting a conflict analysis;
- Interaction between programs and conflict;
- Conflict sensitive strategies for access to learning environments;
- Conflict sensitive strategies for teaching and learning;
- Conflict sensitive strategies for teachers and other education personnel;
- Conflict sensitive strategies for education policy;
- CSE monitoring and evaluation.
The training began with an introduction to CSE and was followed by a presentation about how best to conduct conflict analysis. After lunch, facilitators addressed the interaction between access to learning environments and conflict as well as the application of CSE strategies in such contexts.
On the second day, facilitators continued with conflict sensitive strategies for teaching and learning. The final module of the training addressed monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL), with a discussion of how conflict interacts with MEL activities in education programs.
At the end of the training, participants had a better understanding of CSE approaches and were equipped to incorporate both CSE approaches and effective monitoring and evaluating techniques into their work. The training prepared practitioners to look beyond the impact of conflict on access to education, by introducing strategies that help identify ways to mitigate the potential for education to fuel conflict and reinforce inequalities that exacerbate conflict.
